SB 247 Sage Grouse Closure

05-02-2015
We want to express our nearly unanimous strong opposition to SB 247. We have followed closely issues associated with sage grouse management. There are major problems with SB 247. The legislature is NOT the place to determine if a game animal should be hunted or not.
I sent this to Helena this morning. There is a hearing on this bill today.
Dear Senate Fish and Game Members,

This letter is on behalf of the Headwaters Sportsman Association which is a grassroots organization started in 1996 dedicated to promoting increased opportunities for Montana resident hunters and anglers. We have over 150 members who are Montana residents. Almost all of us vote and pay taxes.

There is a solid public process to do so through the FW&P Commission. That process found that hunting would NOT negatively impact sage grouse populations.

Hunters across all political spectrums do NOT want legislators telling us what game animals we can or cannot hunt.

We have noticed that there are no bills from your committee that would require draconian sacrifices from anyone else like you are forcing on MT bird hunters.

One of our top goals is to protect access for Montanans to hunt. We can’t hunt if the season is not open. We want the FW&P Commission to make this decision.
