SB 245 late cow elk hunts

09-02-2015
SB 245 is being heard in the Senate Fish and Game committee today. It is another bill that takes away power from FW&P to set hunting season, using primarily data provided by biologists. Although the process is not perfect, it has always been our position that it is better than having politicians set hunting seasons in Helena.
Dear Headwaters Sportsman Association and friends,

Dear Senate Fish and Game Members,
This letter is on behalf of the Headwaters Sportsman Association which is a grassroots organization started in 1996 dedicated to promoting increased opportunities for Montana resident hunters and anglers. We have over 150 members who are Montana residents.
We want to express our opposition to SB 245. We have followed closely issues associated with late seasons for elk. There are currently working programs in place to reduce elk numbers. If land owners want more elk killed they can allow more elk hunters during the regular five week season. They can also have management and/or depredation hunts if they allow reasonable public access during the five week season.
These programs were developed through open public processes managed by the FW&P Commission. Our members think this open public process is much superior to having the legislature make the call. The legislature is NOT the place to determine new hunting seasons and definitions.
I would be more than happy to discuss this or any other hunting issue with you.
Thanks for your time and consideration,
Shannon Taylor, Secretary
