Senator Brenden's SB 247 to prohibit Sage Grouse Hunting has a hearing date. On March 12, 2015, in the House Fish, Wildlife and Parks Committee, the bill will be heard at 3 PM.

It is imperative that the Committee hear loud and clear from the hunting community that this bill is a bad idea, wrapped up in the lie that hunting mortality is a significant factor in sage grouse populations.

In fact, out of the 19 issues facing sage grouse, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, hunting is the lowest ranking issue.

Montanans have already given up over 80% of our hunting opportunity when you combine closures in almost all of central and eastern Montana, reduction in bag limits and reductions in the length of the season. Unfortunately, that's not enough for some legislators. They want to eliminate your right to hunt healthy populations and to eliminate the Montana Fish & Wildlife Commission's ability to manage the bird.

As we all know, the agency doesn't always get it right, but they did listen to us, and together, sportsmen & women along with the agency and ag partners were able to put together a season that reflected a compromise between saving the bird where they need the most help, and allowing limited opportunity where they are doing fine.

It is also important that the Legislature hear from the hunting community that seasons should be set by the Commission, not by politicians who have personal vendettas against hunter/conservationists.

I hope you will all join me in Helena, March 12th, at 3 PM to let our elected officials know that this bill is a bad idea, and must be stopped.
